Stena Line is well underway in modernising its large European fleet of ferries. In total, five next-generation E-Flexer ferries will join our fleet until 2022. Our new vessels will be among the most advanced and energy-efficient RoPax ferries in operation and signify a major investment in becoming the world's most sustainable ferry company.
5 next-generation ferries for Stena Line
Stena Estrid was the first of the five new next-generation ferries that Stena Line has ordered. At the beginning of 2020, she started operating on the Irish Sea and later during the year the sister vessels Stena Edda and Stena Embla joined her. The three new vessels have been highly appreciated by our customers and have successfully served several different routes, a proof of their flexibility.
At 215 metres in length, the three new vessels on the Irish Sea provides freight capacity of 3,100 lane metres, and the space to carry additional 120 cars and 1,000 passengers and crew.
The remaining two E-Flexer vessels under construction are larger versions with a total length of 240 metres and more capacity. The destination of the as-yet-un-named ferries has not yet been revealed.
The most advanced vessels in operation
Based on over 50 years of experience in ferry operations, our new next-generation ferries are among the most advanced and energy-efficient vessels in operation. In total they are up to 30% more energy efficient than existing vessels in the fleet, thanks to optimum design of the hulls, propellers, bulbs and rudders.
All five vessels are delivered gas-ready, to allow conversion to methanol or LNG fuel.
The next-generation ferries are larger than regular RoPax vessels with more availability per sailing and offer an efficient loading and unloading with drive-through lanes in the two levels.
The next-generation ferries
Our next-generation ferries are one of the most energy-efficient RoPax in the world per unit carried thanks to her hyper-efficient hull shape and propeller design. That gives her one of the industry’s lowest carbon footprint per unit carried.
Incorporating our combined knowledge from ship design and operation since 1962, our next generation ferries are our most fuel-efficient vessels ever. For example, Stena Estrid is equipped with automated waste shuts, biodegradable lubrication oils, LED lighting, solar films on windows and a copper-free anti-fouling coating paint.
The ships’ energy-saving features and ship recycling facilities support our ambitious sustainability strategy.
Our next-generation ferries are a celebration of our Swedish heritage. The look and feel onboard highlight our “Scandi” roots as it is stylishly modern, light and comfortable.
Our new builds are spacious. The panorama glass windows, the Sky bar, and the Hygge lounge are some of the features that reflect our emphasis on Scandinavian design at its best.
Seamless experience onboard
All of our next-generation ferries will be smartly connected for a seamless travel experience, offering a new level of comfort, style, and quality. Digital technology is cleverly used for information and entertainment.
