High-speed ferries
Stena Line made maritime history in 1996 when it launched the world's first high-speed ferry. Stena Explorer was the first in a series of HSS 1500 ferries (High Speed Sea Service) developed by Stena Rederi.

Stena Line's HSS vessels have a unique design and several design solutions have been patented by Stena Rederi. There are two sizes of high-speed ferry. The larger HSS 1500 is able to carry both passengers and freight, while the smaller HSS 900 carries passengers, cars and coaches. There is no difference in the on-board facilities, however, as both types have restaurants, shops, playrooms and so on.

HSS 1500 facts:
Passengers: 1,500
Cars: 360
Load capacity: 900 lane metres
Speed: 40 knots

Multi-purpose ferries
Combi-ferries carry passengers, freight, cars and coaches. There are both day and night ferries and on-board facilities include restaurants, bars, amusement arcades, cinemas, shops and playrooms. The night ferries also have cabins, while some even have a nightclub.

Facts:
Passengers: 1,000-2,400
Cars: 280-555
Load capacity: 850-1,806 lane metres
Speed: 16-20 knots

Stena Europe
Freight and passenger ferries (RoPax ferries)
RoPax ferries are designed to carry passengers and freight, but the emphasis is on freight. These vessels have large decks for lorries, trailers and cars that are easy to load. In addition to facilities such as restaurants, amusement arcades and cinemas, there are also areas specifically for lorry drivers, with a separate dining room, showers and cabins.

Facts:
Passengers: 500-1,500
Cars: 480-550
Load capacity: 1,468-2,100 lane metres
Speed: 18-21 knots

Finnarow
Cargo ships (RoRo)
Cargo ships have the capacity to carry goods that are not permitted to be transported on passenger ferries. There is plenty of space for lorries and trailers. These vessels have facilities that cater for professional lorry drivers, which in some cases are shared with the crew, for example, kitchens and video rooms.

Facts:
Passengers: 65-221
Load capacity: 1,700-2,000 lane metres
Speed: 16-18 knots
